Current Affairs – Indian Economy Special-Inflation
1. The annual rate of inflation based on the wholesale price index stood at -0.21 per cent (provisional) for the weekended 22 August 2009 against -0.95 per cent (provisional) for the previous week reflecting a general rise in consumer prices, especially of food articles and other essential items.
2. The point-to-point inflation rate, however, continued to stay below zero per cent level despite the rising prices of essential commodities. The inflation rate stood at 12.76 per cent during the corresponding week of the previous year (ended 23 August 2008).
3. The build-up of inflation in the current financial year(beginning 1 April 2009) so far was 5.29 per cent compared with a build-up of 6.40 per cent in the corresponding period of the previous year.
4. The 52-week average inflation for the week ended 22 August 2009 was 3.9 per cent.
5. The official wholesale price index for ‘all commodities’ (base: 1993-94 = 100) for the week under review rose 0.8 per cent to 240.7 (provisional) from 238.8 (provisional) for the previous week.
6. The index for the `primary articles’ group rose 0.7 per cent to 270.4 (provisional) from 268.4 (provisional) for the previous week.
7. Among primary articles, the index for ‘food articles’ group rose 0.9 per cent to 272.8 (provisional) from 270.3 (provisional) for the previous week due to higher prices of fruits and vegetables (4 per cent), jowar, urad and bajra (3 per cent each), maize and arhar (2 per cent each) and moong and tea (1 per cent each). However, the prices of barley (-3 per cent) and coffee and ragi (-1 per cent each) declined.
8. The index for ‘non-food articles’ group rose 0.3 per cent to 241.0 (provisional) from 240.3 (provisional) for the previous week due to higher prices of sunflower (3 per cent), raw silk (2 per cent) and groundnut seed, castor seed and raw rubber (1 per cent each). However, the prices of copra and fodder (-1 per cent each) declined.
9. The index for the ‘minerals’ group rose 0.5 per cent to 564.4 (provisional) from 561.7 (provisional) for the previous week due to higher prices of barytes (34 per cent) and iron ore (1 per cent). However, the prices of steatite (-7 per cent) and felspar (-3 per cent) declined.
10. The index for the `fuel, power, light and lubricants’ group rose 1.5 per cent to 343.3 (provisional) from 338.2 (provisional) for the previous week due to higher prices of aviation turbine fuel and electricity (5 per cent each) and furnace oil (1 per cent).
11. The index for the `manufactured products’ group rose 0.5 per cent to 207.5 (provisional) from 206.4 (provisional) for the previous week.
12. Among manufactured products, the index for the ‘food products’ group rose 3.1 per cent to 241.5 (provisional) from 234.2 (provisional) for the previous week due to higher prices of rice bran oil (8 per cent), sugar (7 per cent), oil cakes (5 per cent), imported edible oil (4 per cent) and butter and ghee (1 per cent each). However, the prices of gingelly oil (-3 per cent) declined.
13. The index for the ‘textiles’ group declined 0.3 per cent to 143.2 (provisional) from 143.6 (provisional) for the previous week due to lower prices of texturised yarn and hessian cloth (-3 per cent each) and hessian and sacking bags (-1 per cent).
14. The index for the ‘rubber and plastic products’ group rose 0.2 per cent to 169.6 (provisional) from 169.2 (provisional) for the previous week due to higher prices of plastic items (6 per cent), PVC fitting and accessories (3 per cent).
15. The index for the ‘chemicals and chemical products’ group declined 0.7 per cent to 226.4 (provisional) from 228.0 (provisional) for the previous week due to lower prices of ammonium sulphate (N-content 15 per cent). However, the prices of PVC resins and purified terephthalic acid (PTA) (4 per cent each) moved up.
16. The index for the ‘non-metallic mineral products’ group declined 0.4 per cent to 225.0 (provisional) from 225.9 (provisional) for the previous week due to lower prices of cement (-1 per cent).
17. The index for the ‘basic metals, alloys and metal products’ group rose 0.2 per cent to 255.6 (provisional) from 255.2 (provisional) for the previous week due to higher prices of zinc (4 per cent), pipes and tubes, foundry pig iron and basic pig iron (2 per cent each) and steel sheets, plates and strips (1 per cent). However, the prices of MS bars and rounds (-3 per cent), steel ingots, other iron steel, zinc ingots and lead ingots (-1 per cent each) declined.
18. The index for the ‘machinery and machine tools’ group rose 0.3 per cent to 172.3 (provisional) from 171.8 (provisional) for the previous week due to higher prices of complete engines (3 per cent).
19. The rate of inflation for the week ended 27 June 2009 has been revised to -1.09 per cent from -1.55 per cent (provisional) reported earlier (vide press note dated 10 July 2009) as the final wholesale price index for `all commodities’ stood at 235.8 against 234.7 (provisional) during the week.
